Small cross tattoo on the inner wrist
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is photographed palm up, showing a small, simple cross tattoo near the base of the palm at the inner wrist. The cross appears to be solid dark ink with clean, straight lines and no shading. The background is a grey sofa and a mint green silicone wristband is worn on the forearm.

The lamp has gone dark again, and you are up the iron stairs before the bell finishes ringing in the kitchen. Your father's boots sit by the door where he left them, the laces still knotted from the morning. Outside, rain comes sideways off the Minch and the sea is the colour of wet slate.

The lens is cold to the touch. You trim the wick, polish the brass, and count the bolts the way he taught you. Below, at the foot of the cliff, a small wooden cross stands on the rocks, nailed to a post that somebody put there long before you were born. Your mother said it marks the place where the Clara went under, though nobody living had seen it happen. You keep a rag in your pocket for the glass.
At two in the morning a light appears south of the skerry, low and wavering, a fishing boat with its engine coughing. You hold your palm over the spare lamp to check the heat, then turn the beam toward the water. It finds the hull. The boat swings round, and you watch its wake straighten into a clean white line that points home.
By dawn the rain has stopped. You walk down the path with a flask and find the old cross leaning further into the grass, so you press it upright with your boot and tie a strip of green ribbon round the arm, the same green as the buoy that nearly took your brother. Then you climb back up, because the lamp still needs oiling and nobody else is going to do it.
