Small cross and semicolon on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot and ankle are shown, with a small tattoo on the inner ankle bone area. The tattoo combines a thin upright cross with a semicolon shape, drawn in crisp, delicate black linework with no shading. The plain grey sofa and jeans in the background keep the focus on the small design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Waltzer's board had split down the middle in the night, and Joe Parr came stumbling across the wet grass with the news before the kettle had boiled. Mags Tully finished the stroke she was on before she looked up. Her grandmother had taught her that a line left hanging spoils the whole board, and the fair had a habit of leaving people hanging.

The board read WALTZER in red letters, with a thin gold cross laid over the T. Nan had insisted on that in 1961, a small thing for luck, and beside it she had tucked a semicolon at the end of the lettering. Mags had always thought it was a private joke. Nan said it was the mark a good printer uses when a sentence is meant to carry on.

Joe wanted the board replaced by Thursday, the next pitch being Ramsgate and the council man already sniffing about the paintwork. Mags carried the split half to the trestles herself, laid it flat, and mixed black from the tin Nan kept under the caravan step. She painted the crack first, filling it with a steady hand, then the semicolon, small and exact, sitting between the last word and the wide empty space where the next town would go.

"Who's that for?" Joe asked. "Nobody reads punctuation on a fairground."

"Nan did," she said. "It means we're not finished." The paint was tacky by dusk, so they left it to set overnight, and in the morning they hauled the Waltzer onto the lorry with the board strapped on top, the little mark catching the light all the way to Ramsgate.
