Mrs Pell kept the good cups for guests who paid in advance, and the rest of us drank from chipped mugs with Skegness printed on the side. The Marigold had eleven rooms, a brass bell on the hall table and a rule about the gas meter that nobody had ever read. In August the lodgers came down to breakfast sunburnt and quarrelsome, and I was the one who carried the toast.

The summer Room Four was let to a Mr and Mrs Askew, I found a paper crown under the mattress, the sort you pull from a cracker, gone soft with damp. Pinned to it was a receipt from the fish stall on the front, and on the back someone had written love in a looping hand, the l as tall as a lamp post, then crossed out everything after it. I folded it into my apron pocket meaning to give it back.

They checked out on the Saturday before I could. Mrs Pell took the forty pence for the bell and said the Askews were nice enough, though he had called the sea a puddle. Nobody came back for the crown, so I kept it in the drawer of the hall table with the spare keys.

I still have it, flattened inside a library book, and when the weather turns grey along the front I take it out and count the points. Five, always five, the way a crown should be. Whoever wrote that word meant it, or meant to mean it, and I have never once been able to tell which.
