Nessa had the slate under her arm before the gale stopped rattling the chapel windows, and she carried it up the hill past the winding house with the wind shoving at her back. Her brother Idris wanted it for sledge runners. She wanted it for the pit wall, where her father had once chalked a square for her to fill.

At the top of the tip road she scraped the coal dust off with her sleeve and found the square still there beneath it, a rough box someone had scratched years ago. She took a stub of pencil from her coat pocket and sat on the wet stone. Her father was on back shift at the face, three miles under the hills, and her mother said men came up when they came up. Nessa had decided, somewhere between the chapel and the tip, that a crown might bring him up sooner.

She drew it small, the way Miss Pritchard taught them to draw kings in the margins of their copybooks: three points and a band. When she finished it sat neatly above the square like a hat on a shelf. She waited for something to happen. Nothing did, except the siren on the winding house wailing the end of the shift, and somewhere below, boots on the cinder path.

Her father came round the corner with his lamp unlit and his face grey as ash, and stopped when he saw the slate. "Who's king of this, then?" he asked. Nessa pointed at the square. "That's the house. The crown's for you, for coming home." He laughed until he coughed, and then he lifted her off the ground, slate and all.
