Marta dipped the sable brush again and let the ink settle into the curve of the G. The name was for the mare, Ginger, who had carried the Halloran family through three counties of mud and one flood, and who was now too old to clear the hoop but still walked the ring each evening with a bead of blue glass knotted into her forelock like a small lit window. Nobody had paid for a new horse in six years. The lions had gone to a sanctuary in the spring, and the clowns were selling ice creams from a van at the seaside.

Halloran watched her finish the final swash, a long tail that looped back under the word like a rope making a bow. "You've made her look grander than she is."

"She is grander than she is," Marta said. "That's what the sign is for."

He laughed, the laugh turned into a cough, and he didn't argue. Through the canvas came the slow thump of the mare being led out to graze, hooves in the wet grass, and the sound of the last ticket seller counting coins into a biscuit tin.
