Small crown tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small crown outline is inked in black on a finger of a hand with gold-painted nails. The linework is fine and simple, with light shading in the crown's base and points. The hand is photographed against a dark grey wall, and the ink is the only colour in the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the lamp is only good for one face at a time. You want the crown story, the one about the smallest kingdom. Dust came down over Kelder Ridge for forty winters, and the last queen of the ridge had nothing left to rule but a crate of seed and a dozen people who still believed in her. She could not afford a proper circlet, so she had a clockmaker's apprentice ink one on the first finger of the runner she trusted most, a girl called Ysolde Parr who could cross the salt flats faster than any drone.

Ysolde carried the vault key for nine days. Each night she sat in the lee of a rusted hauler and turned the ring on her finger, feeling the little points of the crown rub against the bone. The ink had been shaded thick at the base so the glare would not wash it out. Nobody else knew what the key opened. The crown was the only thing that reminded her she still belonged to someone, and that was enough to keep her walking.

When she reached the far gate, the guards laughed at the small black mark and asked where her army was. Ysolde held up her hand and said the kingdom was in the finger, and that a kingdom needed nothing more than one faithful person to keep it. They let her through. The seed went into the ground that spring, and the ridge still grows wheat where the vault once stood. Look closely at the old runners and you may see a crown on one of them, though none of them can tell you which queen first gave it.
