Small crowns on two fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are clasped together against a white painted brick wall, with a small crown tattoo on one finger of each hand. The crown on the upper finger is a solid black silhouette, while the crown on the lower finger is drawn in thin outline with light shading inside. Both are in black ink on pale skin, and the close framing keeps the tattoos at the centre of the image.

Before the shutters went up, Maeve already had flour to her elbows and a grudge in her chest. The Crown Bake was three weeks away, and the baker whose loaf rose tallest kept the window stall at the Hebden Bridge market for a year. Dev had won it last spring by a hair, and he had been whistling about it ever since. When she came through the back door at four, his crown buns were already cooling in rows on the steel table, and the solid dark ones were the ones he'd dusted with treacle, the way their grandmother never had.

She found him sweeping the flour off the step with the back of his boot. He didn't look up. She picked up the old tin from the shelf, the one Gran Ada used for the first proof, and turned it over in the lamplight. Scratched into the base were two small crowns, one filled in, one only outlined, and beneath them in pencil: one for each hand. Dev stopped sweeping. Neither of them had ever asked which of them Gran had meant the outlined one for.

They didn't settle it with words. They kneaded a single loaf between them, his dough and hers pressed together until nobody could say where one stopped. Maeve shaped the crowns with her thumbs, and Dev pinched the peaks. When the oven door opened, the light came up over the brick wall of the yard and the loaf had risen into two crowns joined at the base.

They tore it in the middle, one half pale and one half dark with treacle, and ate standing at the table while the first van rattled past outside.
