Small crown tattoos on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are pressed together, showing a small solid black crown on the middle finger and a smaller outlined crown on a neighbouring finger. The crowns use clean, simple linework with the solid one showing dense black fill and the outlined one showing thin lines. The image uses only black ink against pale skin, with a metal skull bracelet on one wrist and a white painted brick wall behind.

The snow had shut the lane to Hollin Farm for nine days when Ada Crewe found the stranger asleep in the cattle shed, a sack of coins under his head. She woke him with the toe of her boot, and he asked, very politely, whether there was any bread left from the morning.

Her brothers argued over what to do. Wat said the man had a king's way of asking. Simeon said kings did not walk in from the fields with frost in their beards and no horse. They fed him anyway, two heels of loaf and a cup of ale gone thin with cold. Before he left, the stranger pressed a thumb to each of their fingers in turn, and where it touched there was a small black crown, one drawn solid and one drawn in thin lines, and neither brother could say afterwards which had been done to which.
Throughout the lean months Wat's crown darkened as he worked the plough through the frozen furrows, while Simeon's faded to a ring of pale lines. Ada noticed that the two of them never once sat at the table with their hands apart, and that whenever one reached for the salt, the other's fingers followed without a word.
When the thaw came, the stranger returned up the lane with the sun behind him. He looked at the brothers' hands resting together on the wooden board and laughed, a dry sound like a gate. He took the sack of coins from under his coat, set it on the windowsill beside Ada, and walked on towards the river, where the ice was already breaking.
