Wolf head tattoo on a finger
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small wolf's head is tattooed on the side of a finger, facing forward with pointed ears and a closed-mouth expression. The fur is rendered with soft grey shading and fine dark linework, giving it a realistic look. The ink is entirely black and grey, set against pale skin and dark blue nail polish, with a blurred background.

The bridge at Coldwater went down in the flood of the year the bears were sold, and after that Pell's Travelling Marvels never again drew a full tent. By the back end of the autumn there were two horses, a clown who also cooked the mutton, and a grey wolf called Mercy that had come to the show as a cub from a drover in Lincolnshire.

Ansel Pell fed the wolf last every night, after the lamps were out and the canvas had stopped ticking in the wind. Mercy would climb onto the painted tub in the empty ring and sit with her head up, the way she had been taught for the crowds, and the few people left in the stands would clap politely and walk home in the dark. Nobody asked why a wolf would stay with a show that could no longer pay for its meat.
In the village of Sallow Green a girl with a torch asked him that very thing, leaning on the wagon wheel. Pell told her the old story his father had told him: a wolf does not leave the people who fed her, she waits for the people to leave first, and then she goes. The girl laughed and said it was only a story. Pell said that was what all the old stories were for.
The show folded at Candlemas. The horses went to a farmer for ploughing and the clown took the cart to his sister's in Hull. Pell put a bowl of mutton at the edge of the wood each night after that, and each morning the bowl was bare and clean. On the last morning there was a single grey hair lying on the rim, and he tucked it into his waistcoat pocket and went home by the road.
