Small diamond outline on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline of a faceted diamond sits on the side of a finger, drawn in a single dark ink line with simple internal facets. The linework is thin and even, and the tattoo has no shading or fill. The photograph shows the hand resting on a grey, textured blanket, with the tattoo as the clear focus near the centre of the frame.

You learn the facets before you learn the stones. Mr Abernethy makes you draw them on the back of the pawn ledger every morning, eight lines to a crown, until your hand stops shaking. The shop on Gosforth Row smells of methylated spirit and Brasso, and the window holds three tired trays of rings that nobody has come back for.

The one you watch is a Saturday ring with a chip of glass in its setting, brought in by a farmer's wife from Hexham who wants eleven shillings on it. You tell Mr Abernethy the glass is paste. He tells you that paste is honest if you say so with your face rather than your mouth. While he counts coins into her palm, you copy the stone's outline onto a scrap of card with the stub of pencil behind your ear.
Weeks later she comes back alone. The ring has been sold on to a man from Carlisle, and she has come to ask whether anyone kept a drawing of it. You had forgotten the card was in your apron pocket. You hand it over. She holds it to the window, traces the top facet with a fingernail, and says it looks more like a diamond than the thing ever did.
That night you sit up with the ledger open and the pencil beside it. You draw the crown again from memory, then a second time without looking, and the lines come out cleaner than any you made under Mr Abernethy's eye. In the morning you leave the drawing on the counter for him to find, and you say nothing about it, and neither does he.
