Heart and script letter on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline of a heart sits on the side of a finger, with a stylised script letter inside it. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The hand is photographed palm side against a dark, glossy surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the kettle on before the shift whistle, because the men came up from the Harrowby pit with the dark still in their collars and tea was the only thing that loosened their tongues. She set out six cups on the oilcloth and counted them twice, though there were always six.

Her brother Ray came in last, as he always did, and stood in the doorway turning his cap. He did not sit. Instead he took a folded square of paper from his waistcoat and pushed it across the table with one black fingertip, the nail still rimmed with coal.

It was a drawing in pencil, done by someone who had never learned to shade. A heart made from a single unbroken line, and inside it a letter R with a long curl at its tail, the sort of thing a lad scratches on a locker door at sixteen when he is daft about a girl. Nell turned it over. Nothing on the back.

"Off the lamp-room hook," Ray said. "Somebody's been leaving them there since August. Same letter. Same heart." He rubbed his jaw and left a streak of soot on it. "Thought you'd know the hand."

She didn't know the hand. But she knew the curl, because she had made it herself at the back of her school jotter, years ago, copying it from a tin of Lyle's. Nell took the pencil from behind her ear, drew a second heart beneath the first, and wrote her own initial inside it, the tail curling just the same. She folded the paper twice and handed it back to Ray. "Put that on the hook tonight," she said. "Then bring me the answer in the morning."
