A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boats were late coming in that October, and Ada Quoy went down to the shingle at dusk with a lantern and a basket of crusts, because her grandson had gone out after the lobster pots and not come back with them. Nobody on Sker thought much of the creature that lived in the sea caves under the north cliff. They called it the Little Stegling, a name the minister had taken from a book, and they said it was no bigger than a dog and had a row of bony plates down its back like the teeth of a comb.

Ada had never seen it. She set the crusts on the flat stone where the tide never reached, then sat on the wall with her knees drawn up, singing the old boat song the way her mother had taught her, badly, to keep her own courage up. The lantern hissed. A long tail slid over the rock behind her, slow as rope paying out, and the plates along it clicked when it moved.

"You'll want to take them home," said the creature, in a voice like wind through a cracked pot. Ada did not scream. She was too tired to scream, and it was plainly more afraid of her than she was of it. It had been carrying the lost things of Sker up the cliff path for forty years, it said: nets, gloves, a child's red shoe, a tin of tea that had floated in from a wreck. It left each one on the doorstep of whoever would miss it most, and nobody had ever once thanked it.

Ada looked out past the headland. A light was swinging in the bay, slow and unsteady, coming closer. She lifted her lantern high, and the light in the bay turned towards it.
