Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small single-line drawing of a dog sitting upright, shown in profile with its head raised. The linework is thin and unshaded, with a few interior lines suggesting the chest and legs. The ink is black on pale skin, and the image is composed as a close crop of the arm against a plain, out-of-focus background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dog was already sitting at the kerb when the four-ten pulled into Ashcombe Green, same as every weekday since the spring. Nobody in the village could say whose she was. She had a grey muzzle, a narrow chest and a way of holding her head high, as if she were reading the destination board on the shelter, which she could not do, and Walter Hollis had decided that was the whole joke of her.

Walter had driven the Ashcombe route for nineteen years and he was retiring at Michaelmas. His wife Dot had already laid out the good tablecloth for the tea. On his last run he slowed at the green and the dog rose, shook herself and trotted alongside the bus as far as the almshouse gate, then sat again exactly where the paint had worn off the kerb. Walter watched her in the wing mirror until the hedge took her.

The new driver, a lad called Terry Bunce with oil on his cuffs, did not know her habits. He braked for her anyway and leaned out of the window. 'Come on then, madam,' he said. She looked at him for a long moment, then back down the road where the bus had come from, and did not move.

By the first frost Terry had a habit of leaving a heel of bread on the kerb before his run. Nobody told him to. Some afternoons she ate it, some afternoons she didn't, and every day she was there, head up, waiting for a bus that had changed its driver but not its road.
