Small dot cluster on a wrist
Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small cluster of black dots sits on the wrist of a hand resting on a white sheet. The dots are crisp and evenly spaced, with no shading, and the design is tiny relative to the wrist. Stacked brown leather bracelets and dark nail polish appear beside it, and the soft, neutral background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Nobody had ever won at the dice booth on Tallow Common, not in the forty years the fair had come over the hill each October. The booth was painted green and gold, and its roof sagged like a wet hat, but the dice were the thing. Old Mother Sallow kept them in a tin: six small bone cubes with black pips so neat and even they looked printed rather than cut.

Ada Pell came to the booth the autumn her father's hay was spoiled by rain. She had one thing of value, a bead of blue glass on a length of thread, and she laid it on the board. Mother Sallow only smiled and rattled the cup. "Call your number," she said, "and mind you call the house you live in, not the one you want."
Ada called four. The die fell, and the pips came up in a tight square she had seen before, on the dresser knob at home or in the margin of her mother's almanac, she could not say which. Beside the square sat a fifth pip that had not been there a moment earlier, set a little apart, like a door left ajar.
She lost the bead, and she laughed, because the fifth pip had been a door after all. Walking home by the road the fair had come on, she counted gates and stiles until she reached her father's yard, where the hay stood dry, which it had not done in a week. The fair left before dawn. Nobody has found the booth since, but the blue bead turned up in Mother Sallow's tin, and it was still warm.
