Script love tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised with fingers spread, photographed against a dark background with soft bokeh lights. The word love is written in thin, flowing script on the side of one finger, drawn in a single fine line. The ink appears dark and the composition keeps the tattoo small and central in the frame.

The ferry still hasn't come back for the post, so I am writing this on the back of the tide tables and giving it to Mrs Gunn, who has promised to walk it across at low water. You will say I should have telephoned. The line to the mainland has been dead since the October gales, and anyway, you never liked hearing my voice go thin over the wire.

Out here the lights of Ardvane sit on the far shore like a scatter of coins someone dropped on black cloth. Every night I count them from the north window. Forty-one at last count, though the new houses on the hill have made it hard. You left on the Tuesday boat with one case and a promise to write by return, and I have kept the lamp lit in the cottage window every night since, the way we agreed, so you can find the way back if the weather turns you round.

The word at the foot of this page is the only thing I have written without first drafting it on the tide tables. I used the fine nib you bought me in Oban and made one long unbroken stroke, the way Ruthven's gran used to sign her ledgers, and the ink has bled a little where the pen rested. I have not signed it. You will know the hand.

So here is the arrangement. I keep the lamp and the count, and you keep writing, even if the post is slow and the boats are full of other people's crates. When you come home we will see whether the word still holds, or whether it has faded like everything else on this rock. Bring the case. The kettle is already on the hob.
