Swirled elephant behind the ear
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small elephant is drawn in a single thin black outline, with swirling decorative lines filling its body and legs. The tattoo sits on the skin behind the ear, with the ear and part of the head visible at the edge of the frame. The ink is dark and uniform, and the soft, dim lighting gives the photograph a muted, moody tone.

Dear Mr Ashdown,

The elephant came aboard at Colombo in a crate lined with straw, and by the second week out she had learned the sound of the bell that meant dinner. Her name was Parvati, though the purser wrote it down as Pamela on the manifest and nobody corrected him. I was given her to feed and to keep clean, which is not a task I expected when I signed on as a steward.
Each morning before the heat I paint her with ochre and a shaving brush, following the curls the old mahout showed me: a spiral on the shoulder, a scroll down each foreleg, a tight whorl over the ribs. The lines must set before the spray reaches the afterdeck, or they run into grey rivulets on the planking. Chief Mackay says the ship smells like a bazaar and the bridge has grumbled about the ochre on the rail. I tell him she is the only passenger who has paid her fare in full.
Off Aden the swell came up in the night and the crate rattled loose. She stood through it with her trunk wrapped round a stanchion and her legs braced wide, and when the bosun ran to her she only blew, long and low, until the men stopped shouting. By dawn the ochre had washed away everywhere except behind one ear, where the spiral was still sharp.
You asked for a sketch of her to take home. I have drawn her as I could still see her, one unbroken line for the body with the curls set inside it, and I enclose it with this letter. Mackay has already asked whether I could put one on his wrist, and I have told him ink will outlast any ochre the sea cares to take. Yours faithfully, Tom Reddy, Steward.
