A ship out of Lisbon, carrying tea and one grey beast the captain had bought from a travelling fair. The animal could not bear the rolling of the sea, so it stood in the dark hold with its trunk raised high, tasting the air for land. Each morning the cook counted the days by how far that trunk lifted. When the coast showed at last, the trunk went straight up like a finger pointing at a star, and the sailors swore the beast had found the way.
They put it ashore in the bay below Carrick Head, where the sand is the colour of old bread. The island folk had no word for it, so they called it the Mhór, which means the great one, though it was no bigger than a cart. Nobody ever saw it lie down. It walked the cliffs at dusk, and wherever its feet went the grass came up greener for a season.
When the boat sailed again, the captain's daughter stayed behind. She kept a tin of its straw bedding and a single grey hair from its tail, and every dawn she drew the beast on her own finger in ink, trunk up, so that someone on this rock would always know which way home was.
