The night porter at St Aldric's kept a bead of blue glass in his tunic pocket, though nobody ever saw him take it out. When the wards went quiet after two, he walked the long corridor from the lifts to the children's wing, and the nurses said he counted the doors under his breath, as if each one might be watching him back.

There was a widow in bed nine who had come in with a fever and a grievance. She told the night staff that her neighbour had praised her husband's new car, and that was why her chest had gone bad. She said it plainly, the way people say the bins are due on Tuesday. The porter brought her water and listened, and when she asked what he kept in his pocket, he said it was only a little eye that did not sleep.

The nurses decided the neighbour was not real, but the porter had a habit of drawing small eyes on the back of spare drug charts in biro, the iris a neat circle, the lashes fanning out above and below. He pinned one above every bed he cleaned. By the end of the month the ward had a hundred of them, and the widow's fever broke on a Thursday morning. She asked for the eye over her bed to be taken down. The porter said he would see to it, and he did not.

It is still there, a small dark circle on the wall above bed nine, lashes out, keeping watch over an empty mattress that nobody has the heart to strip.
