Small yellow sunflower on the inner wrist
Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo
A small, neatly outlined sunflower sits on the inner wrist, with yellow petals radiating around a dark brown centre. The linework is thin and even, with the petals filled in solid yellow and subtle shading in the centre. The tattoo is shown in close crop against plain pale skin, with a blurred background of denim and furniture.

The sailors had stopped asking when the wind would come back, so Mairead took to counting the seeds in the pantry instead. Forty-two sacks of sunflower seed had been stowed under the hatch at Lisbon, a gift from a grower who said the flowers would turn their faces to the galley lamp if the ship ever lost its way.

Her father, the cook, did not believe it. He said a flower only turned where the sun was, and at sea there was never enough sun to follow. But on the ninth day of the calm a single yellow head broke through the cracked tub by the rail, and every man aboard went quiet to watch it. It opened a little each morning and bent a little toward the east, though the east was only fog where the sun hid.
They named it Little Sun and fed it their rainwater, a cup at a time. The captain paid it a visit each dawn with his cap in his hands. When the breeze finally came, it came from the flower's side of the ship, and Mairead swore it was the flower that had called it. Her father said that was nonsense, and then he sat on the hatch and cried into his apron, because the bloom had dropped its petals overnight and left only its dark centre, round and patient as a coin.
They carried the seeds home in a tin. Mairead still has the tin, and she keeps one seed in her pocket for every port.
