Small feather tattoo on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small feather is tattooed in black ink on the inner wrist, angled diagonally with its quill pointing down. The feather is drawn with fine, delicate linework and soft shading along its barbs, giving it a realistic texture. The image is in black and grey against a plain, pale background, with the subject centred on the skin.

The gull's feather had come down on the slipway at the turn of the tide, and Marion Tulloch picked it up before the children could see it. For a week she told herself she would throw it out. Then Davie Lunan came up the steps with a crate of mackerel and stood dripping in her kitchen, saying the Morag was going out again on Thursday with a new engine and a crew of two lads from Anstruther who had never seen a squall. He asked after her hands. She said her hands were fine. He looked at the feather on the sill and said nothing, which was how she knew he had seen it before, on a gull that had come off the same slipway the autumn Iain went out.

On Thursday the wind backed round to the north-east and the harbour filled with boats running for shelter. Marion stood at the window with the bell in one hand and the feather in the other, and she counted the lights coming in past the pier. Eleven. Twelve. The Morag's light came last, slow and low to the water, and she rang the bell once for each of the men aboard her, which was the only sum she had ever been good at.
