Small Q and heart tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a letter Q with a solid heart beneath it sits on the inner wrist and forearm. The linework is thin and even, with the heart filled in solid black and no shading or colour. The tight crop shows the wrist against a blue-grey V-neck top and bare shoulder, with the face out of frame.

His thumb kept pressing a folded card against the steering wheel.

She asked him to step down and walked the trailer herself. Behind crates of tinned peaches sat a pine box with a brass hasp, and tucked under the hasp was a playing card: the queen of hearts, its corner softened the way cards go when they have been carried a long way in a pocket. Her old sergeant used to say smugglers passed the queens through and saved the kings for the searches. A queen looked like a gift. A king looked like a threat.
The driver said the card belonged to his sister, who poured drinks in a bar in Ghent and had pressed it into his palm for luck. Nell turned it over. On the back, in soft pencil, someone had written a single word, Tuesday, and beneath it a row of tiny hearts, each one a little smaller than the last. Tuesday was tomorrow. She laid the card on the bonnet between them, where the rain could not reach it.
She did not open the box. She noted the card's bent corner in her notebook, stamped the manifest and handed back his papers. He drove off into the wet dark with the queen still in his hand, and Nell stood under the lamps wondering which of them was holding the trump.
