Pineapple tattoo on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small pineapple with a crosshatched body and spiky crown sits on the upper arm. It is drawn in thin black linework with no shading, and the colour is limited to black ink. The arm is shown against a plain green background, with a grey t-shirt sleeve and loose hair framing the tattoo.

The net is still wet when Dougie Pascoe hands you the pineapple across the fish market at Newlyn, and you know before you touch it that it has come a long way, because the skin is bruised and the crown is still green and proud. Nobody on the fleet has seen one up close. Mrs Trewhella at the chandlery wants four pounds for it, which is a day's share, and you pay it anyway.

Back aboard the Good Intent you mend the mesh on the stern while the others wash down. Your fingers know the diamonds of the twine better than they know your own handwriting, and the crosshatch on the fruit looks to you like the knots you tie without thinking. Skipper Penrose lifts the lid of the fish hold and asks what that's for. You say supper, and he laughs and says the cabin boy will need teaching how to eat a thing with a hat on.
Out past the Runnel Stone at dawn, with the swell lifting the boat like a hand under a tray, you cut the fruit with the galley knife. The juice runs down your wrist and stings the small nicks you've collected from hooks. The boy, Tom, eats the first wedge with his whole face, and you watch him try to say something and fail.
That evening you twist the crown free and push its stalk into a jam jar of seawater on the wheelhouse sill, where it sits green against the grey light. Penrose notices it at the next haul and says nothing, which from him is a blessing. Weeks later, when the boat is landed and the jar is still there, you think about the fleet, the twine and the long crossing home, and you decide a thing can be kept just by not throwing it over the side.
