The snow had shut the lane for three days when Mabel Quarles found the monkey in the bottom of a feed sack. It was no bigger than a walnut, carved from a scrap of ash, with a round face and two ears like cups. It had come in with the sacks from Hobb's mill, and nobody could say who had put it there. Her brother called it a bad omen. Her mother called it a toy, and toys belonged to children, and there were no children left on Lower Fold Farm but the two of them.

So Mabel wrapped it in a rag and carried it across the yard, where the hens huddled in the straw and the cow breathed clouds over the gate. She set it on the fence post by the pond. "Go on, then," she told it. "Find whoever dropped you." The wind came off the moor and rattled the ice on the trough, and when she looked back the monkey had turned its face toward the road, as if it had only been waiting for permission.
The thaw came three weeks later, with a cart from the fair at Sorrow Cross driven by a man with one glove. He asked after a little wooden monkey. Mabel said nothing, and her brother opened his mouth, and the man laughed and told them to keep it. "It has done more travelling than I have," he said, "and it always ends up with whoever it likes best."
That night Mabel woke to the sound of the sack being dragged across the boards. In the grey light the monkey sat on top of the oats, grinning at her, its ears still wet with snowmelt. She put it in her coat pocket and did not tell her brother, who had enough to worry about with the wall the storm had brought down.
