Keys and open hand on a thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an open palm rising above a steel ring of old-fashioned keys, drawn in clean black outline. The linework is even and the design is shown without colour, with little visible shading. The photograph is cropped to the upper thigh and the hands of the wearer, against a plain blue backdrop.

Nobody at Hollin Bridge crossing knew where the ring of keys came from, only that it hung on the nail above the kettle when Sergeant Dorrit handed me the night shift. Forty-three keys, steel gone dull, each with a cardboard tag and a date in pencil. I inherited it the winter my eyes gave out on the screens and they moved me to the hut at the barrier.

Most nights the only work was my hand. Palm up and flat for wait, then the same palm turned for go. A lorry driver from Gdansk once asked what the keys were for, and I told him the people who passed through left things behind and the post kept them until they came back. He laughed and said nobody comes back for anything at this hour.
In March a woman in a grey coat stopped at the window with a child asleep against her shoulder. Her passport was in order, her papers too. She kept looking past me at the nail. I asked if she had lost something. She said she had left a house with a front door, a back door and a shed, and in the rush she had taken only the key to the shed, and now she could not remember which of the two she needed most.
I lifted the smallest key from the ring, rusted at the bow, and slid it under the glass. She turned it over twice and did not smile. I raised my palm to say go, and she went. The ring is one key lighter now, and the empty hook stays bare, so whoever comes next finds a gap where someone once took back what was theirs.
