Small fine line mark on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman seen from behind sits on a sandy beach, holding a slice of watermelon over her shoulder, with a long fishtail-style braid hanging down her back. A small, thin vertical tattoo in black ink sits on her upper back, near the spine, and is too small to read clearly. The image is bright and warm, with soft focus on the sand and sea in the background.

The melon cart had been stuck in the sand since Tuesday, and Nell Garrow had given up pushing it. Her cousin Ada sat on an upturned crate beside it, plaiting her hair against the glare, three strands going over and under faster than Nell could follow. "Fishtail," Ada said, not looking up. "Gran did it for the regatta. Don't tell me it's just a plait."

By noon the sun had turned the sea into a sheet of tin, and the watermelons sweated in their straw. Nell cut the last of them into wedges with the bread knife and sold them for a penny each to anyone who wandered up from the harbour. The gulls took most of the rinds before the children could bin them. Ada counted the coins into a tobacco tin and said the till was the only honest thing on the beach.
The tide came in early, the way it does on the second day of a spring. Nell turned round to find the cart afloat, its wheels lifting and the crate tipping toward the water. Ada was already in up to her knees, shouting for the rope. Between them they hauled it onto the dry sand, and Ada laughed until she had to sit down.
Later, with the cart propped against the wall of the lifeboat shed, Ada showed Nell how the braid worked. "Every strand you take from the outside, you give back through the middle," she said, and tied it off with a clasp of sea glass. When Nell looked up, the tide had drawn a long line of black seeds across the wet sand, spat out by the children, all of them pointing the same way.
