Lavender sprig on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A botanical lavender sprig with two tall stems of small purple flowers rises from the base of the forearm, with narrow green leaves spreading along each stem. The outlined linework is clean and even, and the flowers and leaves are filled with purple and several shades of green. The sprig is centred on the arm against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been cutting lavender since she could barely reach the top of the rows, and by the third week of July her hands smelt of it so thoroughly that the baker's boy called her Sprig. The field behind Church Road ran down toward the mill pond in long grey-purple stripes, and by seven the bees were already drunk on it. Her father walked ahead with the secateurs, counting stems under his breath the way he counted everything, as though the total might change if he looked away.

The trouble that summer was the man from London, who wanted the oil distilled and the heads sold dry in cellophane to tourists. Nell did not intend to sell her father's field to someone in a pressed shirt. So each morning she carried the bundles to the old still-room behind the chapel, tied them with green twine and hung them upside down from the beams, where the light came through the slats and turned the dust the colour of honey. She told nobody what she was waiting for, because she did not yet know.

The man came on the last Saturday of the month, looked up at the beams full of drying purple, and asked what she meant to do with all of it. Nell took one sprig down, crushed a single bud between her fingers and held it under his nose. One stem, she said, is enough to remember a whole field by. He pinned it to his lapel, looked faintly foolish, and drove off without a contract. That evening her father found the empty beam, said nothing, and laid a bundle on her mother's pillow, which had been turned face-down since the spring she died.
