Small finger tattoos: eye, moon and lotus
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with pink nails and several small black tattoos on the fingers, including an eye with dots on the index finger, a crescent moon inside a circle on the middle finger, and a small mountain line on the ring finger. A larger mandala-style lotus sits on the lower finger near the knuckle, with gold rings on two fingers. The linework is fine and the tattoos are in black ink only, set against a light wooden floor and a denim sleeve.

Nell had kept the almanac since her uncle's hands began to shake, and every night she marked the sky in its margin: a dot for each clear evening, a ring when the moon hung full above the ridge. The village below the pass trusted her ink more than the priest's sums. Only she knew that the small eye she drew beside a date meant a stranger had been seen on the track.

The stranger came in October with a cart of bulbs wrapped in wet sacking. He asked for the lotus pond the old duke had cut into the terraces before the flood, and Nell laughed, because nobody had seen water up there in forty years. He unfolded a map from his coat. The mountain was drawn in one hard line, and the pond was a neat circle of rings, each ring a wall someone had built to hold a harvest back.
They climbed together before dawn, the moon still pale over the ridge. Nell counted her dots aloud and the stranger counted his steps. At the top of the terrace they found the basin choked with reeds and, floating in the middle, one white bloom that had no business surviving a frost. He knelt beside it without touching it. "Your uncle planted this," he said. "He left the bulbs to whoever kept the sky."
That night Nell opened the almanac and drew a new mark beside the date: a small lotus, closed tight, its petals curled like a fist. She did not draw a dot. Below the ridge the lamps came on one by one, and she thought about the rings of stone and the rings of water, and how a plan can outlast the hand that drew it.
