Ada pricked her first star at fifteen, with her mother's darning needle and soot from the lamp wick rubbed into the hole so it wouldn't wash out. Her father had made the rule himself: a star for every man she saw come up the shaft alive. She had laughed at him. The pit took men in ones and twos and never in tidy numbers, and she said so.

By the winter of the flood she had eleven stars on the back of her left hand, the blue gone soft at the edges. She stood at the pit head with Mrs Ferris, who held a shawl over both their shoulders and kept saying her son's name as if it were a prayer with the wrong ending. The cage came up slow, rattling on its chain. Ada counted the men as they stepped out grey-faced and blinking, and her lips moved with the numbers until the count matched the list on the board.

Tom was not on the list. He had swapped shifts with Harold Doyle the night before, because Harold's wife was near her time. Harold came up last, carrying Tom's dinner tin as though it might still be useful. Ada took his hand, cold and gritty, and turned it over. Then she pulled the needle from her apron pocket, dipped it in the soot she'd kept since fifteen, and pricked a single star on the inside of his wrist, where a man could see it without anyone asking.
