A small lotus flower with layered petals and a pointed centre sits on the back of an ankle, shown against a dark pleated fabric at the top of the frame. The design is drawn in thin, even black outlines with light shading on the petals and no solid fill. The image is a black and white photograph, with the tattoo placed low on the heel side of the ankle and the rest of the frame left plain.

Mind the gunwale, you great lump, the cut's narrower past Stoke Lock than your mother ever let on. Sit on the coil, where the rope won't bite you. Now, you want to know why Hetty Rawle wouldn't sell the boat when the offer came up from Birmingham with a brass kettle thrown in?

It was the lily. Nobody had seen a white one on that stretch since the war. The cut had gone so foul with coal dust and broken bottles that the ducks had given up on it. But after the spring floods Hetty went out with a pole and a bucket and found one, lying flat on the black water in the lee of the old wharf, its leaves like coins somebody had dropped and forgotten. Her father said a lily only opens where the mud is deep enough to hold its roots, and the mud there was deep, because the whole town had been tipping its troubles into that water for a hundred years.

The lock company wanted the wharf filled in for a car park. Men came with a digger on a flatbed lorry, and Hetty moored the Mary Ann square across the mouth of the basin and sat on her bow with a flask of tea and a tin of ginger biscuits. They could have shifted her, but they'd have had to shift the boat, and the boat was hers, and so was the bow.

Every evening, at the hour the lock gates shut, the lily folded itself closed like a letter put away in a drawer. In the morning it opened again, and she never once missed watching it do either. Now drink your tea before it goes cold, and mind the step.
