Feather and ribbon ankle tattoo
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot shows a shaded black and grey feather tattoo that hangs from a looped ribbon or cord with a small bead at the top. The feather has soft grey shading and fine pale highlight lines along its central shaft. The sepia-toned photograph is taken from a low angle against a blurred city backdrop, with the ankle and toes in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The feather had come down the line inside a lost glove, pushed into the palm the way a child hides a thing it means to return for. Dennis Pryce found it sweeping under bench four at Harrow Cross. Mrs Ellery, who sold tea from the trolley, said it was a jay's, and that a jay's feather tied to a lamp would keep the signals honest. Nobody believed her, but Dennis tied it to the lamp post at the end of the footbridge anyway, with brown cord and a brass bead off a broken curtain rail.

All that winter the feather turned above the lines. Its grey barbs lifted in the draught off the expresses, and the pale shaft caught the lamplight whenever the sky was clear enough to see the city beyond the sidings. The bead crept a little further up the cord each time the wind changed.
On the last night of February, sleet came sideways and the 11.40 from the coast came round the bend with its signal stuck at green. Dennis was on the footbridge with a lantern. He saw the driver's face through the glass, and he saw the feather swing hard across the lamp and throw a shadow down the track like a raised hand. The driver braked. The train stopped a yard from a goods wagon nobody had cleared.
Nobody wrote it down, because nothing had happened. In spring Dennis unpicked the feather and put it back in the lost property box. The cord stayed on the lamp post, and some mornings the bead is found sitting at the top of it, as if it has been waiting for the wind to decide.
