Small geometric symbol on the heel

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black symbol made of crossed straight lines, forming a diamond-like shape with extended ends, sits on the side of a foot near the ankle. The linework is thin and crisp, with no shading. The skin is lit warmly against a dark, blurred background, and the tattoo is placed slightly off centre in the lower part of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pardoe will tell you the cliff has moved since the Admiralty drew it, and you will not argue, because you have spent the week with a theodolite on your shoulder and a notebook full of numbers that refuse to agree. The boarding house at the end of Hollin Row keeps its breakfast room facing the sea, and from the sill you can see the cross-hatched hump of the old marker, the one somebody cut into the chalk before anyone had a word for benchmark.

Every morning you walk down with the tripod and every evening you come back up with the same error, a hair's breadth of drift that sits in the sums like a stone in a shoe. Mrs Pardoe's nephew, who hauls crates for the fishermen, says the mark is a lobsterman's claim on a patch of ground, and that the crossing lines are his grandfather's way of saying the tide has the last word. You do not believe him. You believe the lines, which are ruled, thin, and set at exactly the angle a surveyor would choose if he meant to be found.

On the last morning the fog lifts early and you set the instrument over the mark and take the sight once more. The crossed strokes run true, their ends reaching out past the diamond as if to hold the sea in place, and the reading comes out clean for the first time all week. You write it down, close the notebook, and say nothing to Mrs Pardoe, who is already at the door with the kettle and a question about your bags.
