Small black Pisces zodiac symbol in a bold, hand-drawn style on the inner wrist of a raised hand, against a dark woven background.

Pisces symbol on the inner wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of the Pisces zodiac symbol, two curved arcs joined by a diagonal line, sits on the inner wrist of a hand held up against a dark woven background. The strokes are bold and slightly uneven, with tapered ends that suggest a brush or freehand line rather than fine stippling. The photograph is shot at an angle with soft vignetting, and the tattoo is the clear focal point in black ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lift in Tanner House had been broken since Tuesday, so Marnie carried the bag of fish up nineteen flights with the water slopping against her thighs. Two goldfish, one orange and one gone the colour of weak tea, had been won at the Saturday fair and handed to her by a man who said they were a matched pair. She had no idea what that meant until she reached the landing and found Ruth Okonedo waiting at her door with her arms folded.

'They're not a pair,' Ruth said. 'They were never going to be a pair. That one's been trying to get out of that bag since the car park.'

Marnie set the bag on the balcony rail. The fish turned in slow circles, each one nosing toward the far end and bumping off the plastic. Below them the estate ran out in grey roofs and washing lines, and a bus pulled into the stop by the Co-op as if nothing had happened.

Her grandad had once tied two fish together with a length of green thread when he took them to the canal, one swimming left, one swimming right, so neither could go anywhere without dragging the other along. He said it was how you kept a promise to something that could not keep one back. She had not thought of it in years until she stood there with the bag in her hands.

Instead she knotted the neck shut, carried it through to Ruth's kitchen, and tipped both fish into the washing-up bowl. They turned once, side by side, then found the two ends of the bowl and stayed there, each one patient, as if the thread were still tied somewhere out of sight.
