Small geometric symbol row on a forearm

A close photograph of a small row of black geometric symbols on the inner forearm, with a spoked wheel shape, a dot inside a circle and two open triangular forms. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The background is a white lace-hemmed top and a turquoise pendant necklace with a tassel, with the arm cropped at the shoulder and the face not shown.

The wireless at the Ship has been spitting since Tuesday, so you'll get this by the post boat and will have to read it the old way. You remember the row we made up on the back step the summer before you went to the yards: the wheel for the mill, the ring with the dot for the moon over Penhallow, the two open triangles for the gulls that would never leave the slipway alone. I've set them at the foot of the page so you'll know it's really me and not Mother writing in my hand.

Mrs Ennis came into the shop this morning with her grandson's boots, cracked across the toe, and asked whether I'd heard the lifeboat had gone out at four. I said I had not, which was true, and she looked at me the way she looks at the tide tables, as if I'd be better off reading them myself. Nobody has said your name in the shop. I've decided that is a good sign, and I intend to keep deciding it until someone gives me a reason not to.

Last night I walked up to the mill and sat on the sluice gate until the moon came round the headland. The wheel hasn't turned since the war, but the water still goes through it, which I suppose is a kind of answer. I counted the gulls. There were eleven, then nine, then none, and then one came back alone and stood on the rail as if it had been sent to check on me.

I've enclosed a stamp for your reply. Write whatever you like, so long as the symbols come first. If the boat is late, look for the wheel turning on the page and know I have not stopped watching the water. Your loving sister, Nell.
