Small giraffe tattoo on the foot

Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

A tiny giraffe with a long neck and thin legs is tattooed on the top of a bare foot, shown in side view with its head raised. The linework is fine and the spots are filled with small dark dots, with a warm orange-brown wash over the body. The background is softly out of focus, keeping the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The tinker Ferris came down the lane in October with a pack that clinked, and nobody in Hollin Wood had seen a giraffe before, though everyone agreed the spotted thing in his tray looked like a question mark that had grown legs. He sold it to the schoolmaster's daughter for a penny, on the understanding that she could bring it back if it would not stand up.

Nell carried it home in her apron pocket. Every evening she set it on the sill of the cottage at the forest's edge, where the bracken pressed against the glass, and every evening it seemed to lift its head a little higher above the foxgloves. Her mother said it was only painted tin. Nell said nothing about the orange wash, which had worn thin under her thumb, or the dark dots she kept counting, forty-one on one side and forty on the other, because one had rubbed off against the bread knife.

The winter the river froze, the lane drifted shut and the doctor could not come. Nell's little brother burned with fever in the back room. She propped the tin giraffe where the lamplight caught its raised neck and told him it was for seeing over the hedges, so that anyone lost in the wood could still find the road home. He slept before the church bell struck midnight.

When Ferris came back in spring for his penny, he found the giraffe standing among the nettles at the front gate, its head above the wall and its face turned towards the village. He did not ask for it back. He asked instead how a tin thing had learned to look for the road.
