Small hashtag symbol tattoo on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small hashtag symbol, made of two vertical and two horizontal black lines, sits on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The skin is pale and the background shows dark denim and a pale wooden floor, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Nobody claimed the brass handbell, so for eleven years it sat on the shelf above the kettle in the lost property office at Halverstone, and I dusted it on Thursdays because no one else would.

The grid was my father's idea, not mine. He worked the signal box on the Carlisle line and kept count of the trains on the back of a spare timetable with a carpenter's pencil: two upright strokes, two across, nine little squares to fill. Each square was a train he had let through safely. When he retired, the timetable came to me in a biscuit tin with a note that said the rest was up to me.

I added to it on the inside of the cupboard door, one square a day for every train I logged as unclaimed and sent on to the depot auction. By the spring of the bell, every square but the centre had been filled. Dilys from the ticket hall stood behind me one morning and said I was playing noughts and crosses with myself, and I told her I was waiting for the 4.10 to come in.

It came in on a wet Tuesday, and the driver walked straight up to the hatch and asked whether anyone had handed in a bell. I passed it through. He turned it over twice, smiled, and said it had been his father's, from a box at the far end of the line. I drew the last stroke through the centre square before the train pulled away, and for the first time the grid was finished.
