Small hat and bow tie icons on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows a small group of simple black icons tattooed on the inner forearm near the wrist. The motifs are a bowler hat, a top hat, a bow tie and a curved hook or cane-like shape, each in solid black with clean outlines. The tattoos are set apart from one another on pale skin against a plain, slightly out of focus background.

The coat rack in the Hollins Hall vestry held forty-one hats by the time the vicar's wife rang the bell for the first dance. Mrs Dorothy Lusk had insisted on a rule: every guest checks one thing in and collects it at midnight, the same way she had done at her own wedding in 1961, and nobody was to argue with a woman who still kept the ledger in her handbag.

I had the ledger, a stub of pencil and a tin of brass tickets that smelled of Brasso. Most of the men handed over bowlers with a joke about the rain. Mr Tolley surrendered his silver-topped cane as though it were a christening gown, and asked me to hold it upright so the ferrule wouldn't scratch the lino. I wrote every name down in capitals, because Mrs Lusk had once lost a Christmas goose to a bad hand of handwriting.
At half eleven a thin man I hadn't noticed all evening slid a bow tie across the trestle, already knotted, and said it belonged to the best man, who was currently waltzing with the bride's aunt without it. I gave him ticket forty-two. He turned it over twice, as if checking for a price, then put it in his breast pocket and went back out into the noise.
At midnight the queue stretched past the urn. The best man came in last, flushed and laughing, and I handed him the bow tie with the ledger open at his name. He tied it in the vestry mirror, failed twice, and got it right on the third try. The only thing left on the rack was a top hat nobody had claimed, so I put it on, checked my reflection in the cold window, and walked out to the car park, where the frost was already waiting.
