Fine line map outline on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single thin black line traces the outline of a hook-shaped peninsula, resembling Cape Cod, with no shading or fill. The linework is even and sits centrally on the inner wrist. The photograph is taken against a dark background, with the palm and fingers of the hand visible above the tattoo.

The surveyor's boat grounded again on the bar off Chatham, and Mr Halloran swore at the tide tables as though they had personally insulted his mother. I sat in the stern with the chart board across my knees, pencil sharpened to a needle, and waited for him to finish. Somebody had to keep the coast honest. Nobody else on the crew would look at the hook of land for longer than it took to light a pipe.

The railway people wanted the outer arm cut off. Their man from Boston had a ruler and a grievance, and he laid both on my drawing as if the sea were a clerk who could be told to shorten its sentences. 'Nobody buys a map with a crooked elbow,' he said. I told him the elbow was where the shoals sat, and the shoals were where the ships died, and a chart that left them out was a lie with a tidy border.
We worked the outer shoals for nine days. On the last evening the wind dropped and the sand ran pale gold in the falling light, and I traced the curl of the land from the lighthouse to the tip, every cusp and nick, while the water slid back off the flats in long silver sheets. Halloran came to look over my shoulder and said nothing for a long time, which from him was praise.
The chart went to Boston with the hook intact. The railway man sent back a single line: Retain the arm, it reads true. I still have the pencil, worn to a stub, and the first print pinned above my desk, the thin line running round the cape like a sentence that refuses to end before it has said what it means.
