Wave line tattoo on inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line curls across the skin like a wave, enclosing a shaded crescent shape with small dots around it, and a tiny bird-like mark sits to the right. The linework is thin and even, with soft grey shading inside the crescent. The close-up framing shows the inner wrist and forearm against a plain background.

The tide had turned before the moon was fully up, which Mabel Trewin said was the sea's way of showing off. She had the tide book open on the sea wall, its pages gone soft with salt, and she ran a thumb down the column of figures while the boy beside her kicked at the weed.

'It's not the moon that moves it,' Eddie said. 'It's the wind.' 'The wind shoves the water about. The moon tells it when to lean.' She pointed at the thin crescent hanging over the harbour wall, pale as a fingernail, and then at the line of foam drawing itself along the shingle in one long curl. 'Watch the bubbles. Where the froth sits still, that's where the sea has stopped to think.'
They watched. A gull came down to the edge of the wash, stood on one leg, then lifted off again with nothing in its beak, and Eddie laughed at it. Mabel did not laugh. She had spent forty winters on this wall counting birds and boats and the small grey ripples that came before a change, and she had never once been able to say why the water listened to a light so far away.
When the tide finally came up over the stones, it came quietly, the way a thing does when it has already made up its mind. Eddie wrote the time in his own notebook, underlined it twice, and handed the pencil back. 'Same time tomorrow?' he asked. Mabel shut the book. 'Same time,' she said, 'if the moon keeps its promise.'
