Small black silhouette tattoos of a bowler hat, a pipe, a top hat and a bow tie on the inside of a wrist.

Hat, pipe and bow tie on a wrist

Other · Black and grey · Photo

Four small solid black silhouette motifs sit on the inner wrist: a bowler hat and a pipe on the left, and a top hat and bow tie on the right. The shapes are simple and flat, with no shading or fine detail, and are arranged in two pairs with a gap between them. The ink is black on pale skin, and the photo is taken straight on, with the wrist filling most of the frame.

Sit down on the landing, the lot of you, and mind the damp, because this is the story of the lift in Merrow House and the two gentlemen who rode it every morning for thirty years without once discussing the weather.

Mr Pell lived on the fourth floor and wore a bowler hat the colour of wet slate. He smoked a briar pipe on the walkway, the smoke climbing past the washing lines as if it had somewhere better to be. Mr Ansell lived on the ninth, and he wore a top hat on Sundays and a black bow tie every day of the week, even the Tuesday he fell into the bins.

Then the lift stuck. Thursday, half six, the cables groaned and the car sat between the seventh and eighth floors with the two of them in it, shoulder to shoulder, the strip light buzzing like a wasp in a jar. Pell unwrapped a humbug and offered Ansell one. Ansell said, 'You'll choke us both.' Pell said, 'Then we'll have company for it.' Nobody laughed, but they went on talking, and by the time the engineer's torch came flickering through the gap in the doors, they had worked out that they had both courted the same woman, Doreen from the laundry, and that she had married a dentist in Leeds.

When the doors opened, Pell handed Ansell his bowler. Ansell handed back the top hat he had been holding without knowing whose it was. Neither of them ever wore the other's again, and the two hats hung on the hook by the lift for years, tipping towards each other whenever someone walked past.
