Line art profile faces on calf

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A single black line drawing shows two stylised profile faces facing each other on the lower leg, with the outlines of the heads and features drawn in continuous strokes. The linework is even and minimal, with no shading, and a small area of pink or red sits near one of the faces. The tattoo is shown in close framing on a pale leg, with black pointed-toe heels with ankle straps in the background.

The snow has closed the Hollin Gate road since Tuesday, and you are the only guest at the Copper Hart who has not complained about it. Mrs Aske brings your tea up on a tray with a saucer for the biscuit she knows you will not eat, and she tells you the drover's boy has been sleeping in the barn since the pass shut, which is the sort of news that keeps an inn going in February.

On the third evening you find the sketchbook. It sits on the windowsill of the snug, a cheap thing with soft corners, and every page holds the same drawing made again and again: two faces in profile, turned toward each other, nearly touching at the mouth. Nobody has lifted the pen from the paper. You can tell because the line never breaks, not at the brow, not at the curl of a hairpin, not where the lips meet. Mrs Aske sees you looking and sets down the coal scuttle. "Her ladyship's idea," she says. "Her and the glazier's daughter. They drew each other across this table every winter until one of them went to Leeds."

You turn to the last page. The faces are the same, but someone has dabbed a single spot of red ochre on the lower lip of the nearer one, the only colour in the whole book, pressed in with a thumb. Outside the snow keeps falling, soft and unhurried, and the lamp hisses. You trace the line with your own finger, from the first ear to the last, and it does not stop anywhere.

In the morning the pass is open and the coach is loud in the yard. Before you go you sit at the snug table and take up the pencil, and you start a new drawing on a clean page: one stroke that you do not lift, a brow and a nose and a mouth. You leave the second face unfinished at the margin for whoever comes up the Gate next.
