Bow tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's legs and feet in red high-heeled shoes stand on a cobbled street. A small bow with long trailing ribbon lines is tattooed on the ankle, drawn in thin, delicate linework. The warm, faded colour grading makes the ink look brownish grey, and the tattoo sits at the centre-left of the frame.

You close the shop on Pennant Lane at ten past eleven, when the gaslamps on the cobbles have gone the colour of weak tea. The last customer wanted a yard of grosgrain for a christening and paid in coppers. You count the drawer twice, then leave the window as it is: a spool of silk the colour of old pennies, unwound just far enough that its end trails across a card of pearl buttons.

Mr Okafor from the bakery opposite knocks on the glass to ask if you're still open. You aren't, but you let him in for the spare key he left with you in March. He stands there in his flour-dusted apron and says his daughter wants a bow on her good shoes for the recital, tied the way your mother used to tie them, with two long tails that never quite meet. You tell him you'll do it tomorrow. You won't. You already know where the spool is.
Upstairs, the sewing room smells of machine oil and damp wool. You pull the spool down, and the silk comes off in one unbroken line, stiff at first, then softening as it warms in your hands. You measure two lengths, fold a loop, and remember what your mother said about bows: a bow is only a promise to come undone and be tied again.
By morning the ribbons are knotted, pressed, and laid in a tissue box with a card that reads "For the recital. Two tails. Don't let them touch." You set the box on the counter where the first sun will reach it, and watch the silk take on the faded brown of the early light.
