Now you'll want to know why the lift in Brackenridge House has never once been mended properly. Pull the stool closer and mind the draught. My mother told it to me the way I'm telling it to you, because she was there the night the bulb went out and Dessie Crane lost his good flat cap down the shaft.

The lift stopped between seven and eight. Inside was Maureen Varley, coming home from the market with a bag of onions and a pair of new black court shoes she'd bought for her sister's wedding, heels so thin they could pin a tin of beans to the floor. With nothing to look at in the dark, she drew a heart in the dust on the brass plate beside the buttons. One line, no shading, no colour. She said it was the only thing in that box she could be sure of.

They sat for four hours. Dessie told her his wife had left him for a man who sold carpets, and Maureen told him a heart is just a line that keeps coming back to where it started. Somewhere past eleven they sang the whole of a song about a boat, badly, and the cables groaned in sympathy. When the doors finally shuddered open, the council man with the torch saw nothing but two grown people grinning like children and a bag of onions rolling across the landing.

The council painted the plate over the following spring. They missed the heart, though, because it had gone into the metal. If you go up to the ninth floor, tilt your head at the buttons and let the light catch it from the window. There it is, still waiting for somebody to step inside and be let out.
