Small horse tattoos on wrists and forearms

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Several small horse tattoos are shown on wrists and forearms, with the arms held together so the designs sit close to one another. The horses are simple silhouettes and small illustrated figures, with some in black and grey shading and one in solid red. The composition is a casual close-up with soft natural light, a wooden surface and a sleeve in the background.

Mother Hesketh swore the grey mare had been sold three times before Michaelmas, and three times she walked back up the lane alone, the broken halter swinging from her neck like a bell rope. The dealers in Ashby stopped asking after her. Nobody wanted a beast that knew the way home better than the man who bought her.

The others were no better. Ember, the red roan, would not stand in a stall unless the black cob was tethered beside her, and Judd, the cob, kicked every gate that kept him from the bay. Penny, the little bay with the white star, simply lay down in the road and waited, which is how the carter found the whole lot of them one wet morning, nose to tail, huddled against the orchard wall where the windfalls lay rotting in the grass.

Mother Hesketh did not sell them. She took a knife to a windfall apple, pressed the cut halves against each animal's hoof and then against her own palm, and said the four of them would travel as one or not at all. The carter still tells it that you can know a Hesketh horse by the mark on its shoulder, and that the family still stands wrist to wrist at the fair when the weather turns, as if the road might pull them apart.
