Four people's wrists and forearms show matching small black fine line outline tattoos of a heart with a looping tail.

Matching heart tattoos on wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Four arms are held together, each with a small heart outline drawn in thin black linework that flows into a looping tail. The hearts vary slightly in size and angle across the four wrists and forearms. The shading is absent, with solid black lines on pale skin in bright daylight, and the composition is close and centred on the tattoos.

Mags Tiller had sold the last of the red balloons before the Tuesday matinee, and that was the only good news the Brightwater Circus had carried into the field at Sleaford all month. The big top had a tear along its eastern seam that nobody could afford to sew. The elephant had gone to a farm near Boston with a letter from the council. What remained were four sisters, the Harkers, who worked the trapeze in lilac leotards and would not be told they were finished.

Their mother had drawn the shape on the back of a ticket stub in 1989: a balloon with a curl of string hanging from its knot. She had it inked onto all four of them in a parlour in Skegness the summer the show nearly folded the first time. "Hold your arms together," she'd said, "so the strings run into each other." Now the four little hearts sat in a line over the ring rail, each tail looping toward the next, and nobody had ever looked at them long enough to see the tails were the same length.

On the Friday the generator died halfway through the second act. In the dark, Nell, the youngest, said she could hear the crowd breathing. Mags told her that was only the tent taking in air. They climbed anyway, reaching blind for each other's wrists, and caught one another on the third swing as they always had.

Afterwards nobody mentioned the act. Mags counted the takings on an upturned crate: forty-one pounds, a jar of coppers, and one balloon some child had bought and forgotten, still tied to the rail by its string, going soft and pink in the corner of the field.
