Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three forearms meet in the centre of the frame, with hands holding the wrists and a beaded bracelet and red cord on one wrist. Two forearms show solid black silhouettes of a figure in a pose, and the right forearm has cursive script reading Michael Jackson. The tattoos are in black ink with soft edges on a pale surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ferris ran the boarding house on Lantern Row with a rule against music after nine, which is why Dora and her cousin Pat waited until the lodgers had gone to the pier shelter before dragging the gramophone into the back parlour. The wallpaper there was the colour of weak tea, and nobody had moved the sideboard since the Coronation. Pat had borrowed a twelve-inch dance band record from the chemist's boy, and the needle hissed for a long moment before the trumpets came in.

They had learned the step from a picture cut out of a magazine and pinned behind the scullery door: a man in a dark suit, one knee bent, leaning back as though the floor had tilted toward the sea. Dora had traced his outline in soot on the back of a bread wrapper and cut him out in black card. Pat said he looked like a burnt match. Dora said he looked like someone who was not going to fall over, and that mattered more.

On the Saturday of the summer concert the children from the terraces packed the front room while the lodgers sat with their tea going cold. Dora went up in her borrowed shoes, lifted her arm the way the cutout had, and felt the whole room lean with her. Then the needle skipped and the lamp guttered, and she held the pose anyway, until the silence turned into laughter and the laughter into applause.

Afterwards Mrs Ferris found the card figure on the piano lid and said nothing about it. She propped it against the window, where the evening light came through the salt-stained glass and threw Dora's shape across the cream wall, and she left it there until September.
