Small sun tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small sun is drawn in black ink, with a plain outlined circle at its centre surrounded by triangular rays and small dots. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or solid fill. The photograph shows a bare leg and foot resting on a grey shag rug, with the tattoo sitting on the side of the ankle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The kiln had cracked again by the time the boy came running up from the river, so I left the wheel spinning and went down with my wet hands still grey. Tamar was already crouched at the mouth of the firing pit, her headcloth pushed back, poking at the ash with a split reed as if the sun might be hiding in it. Three days of rain had soaked the clay, and every jar we had made since the spring thaw had split like an overripe fig.

My mother taught me the stamp before she taught me to lift a bowl. It was a disc of fired clay on a stick, a ring cut round its face, and around the rim she pressed a row of small triangles with the corner of a reed, the way rays fall from a sun drawn in the dust. Between the rays went dots, pressed with the tip of the little finger. She said a pot needed a mark so that the fire would know whose hands had shaped it. I had always thought that superstition. Standing by the broken kiln, I was less certain.

We rebuilt the walls that afternoon, thin and slow, and I stamped every rim while the clay was still soft. Tamar laughed at me for keeping the old pattern, but she pressed her own dots beside mine without being asked. When the fire was lit at dusk, we sat with our backs against the warm mudbrick and counted the flames through the smoke holes as they climbed.

By morning the jars came out whole. Tamar lifted the first one from the ash, turned it to the light, and said nothing for a long time. We carried them up the path in baskets, and every rim still held its small sun.
