Small outline heart tattoo on skin
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart drawn as a single dark outline sits on a curved area of smooth skin. The photograph is black and white, with soft shading across the skin and a gentle highlight along the curve. The heart is centred in the lower half of the frame, with plenty of plain skin around it.

The big top came down in Shrewsbury the week my father stopped being able to lift the ring stand, and nobody said it was the end, because circus people never say the word. They said the tent needed mending, the canvas had gone thin along the seams, the sponsors had gone quiet. I was nineteen and I had been a flyer for four seasons, which in our family meant I was the one who still believed in the net.

The last night we played a field outside Telford, Mrs Abernethy, who had ridden the grey mare Bramble since before I was born, came to my caravan with a biro and asked me to draw something small on her, somewhere nobody would see at the ring. She said she wanted a mark that belonged to the show and not to the crowd. I told her I could barely draw a horse. She said that was fine, horses were hard.
I drew a heart in the soft place below her ribs, a single line going round and round, and I made it lopsided because my hand was shaking from the cold. She looked at it in the little mirror for a long time. Then she laughed and said it looked like it had been run over by a cart, and that was exactly right, because we had all been run over by something.
The tent went to a scrapyard in Hereford the following spring. Bramble was sold to a riding school. I still have the biro, and I still think about how a heart that wobbles is the only kind that holds weight on the way down.
