Small red balloon tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A hand with long white almond-shaped nails and a thin gold ring rests on a dark surface. A small tattoo of a red balloon with a black outline and a thin dark string sits on the side of one finger. The shading is minimal, the red fill is solid, and the composition centres the finger against a plain dark background.

Sit down by the oven, the dough needs its ten minutes and so do you. My grandmother kept the first loaves of the day in this shop when the street was still cobbles and the lamplighter came round with his pole. Every morning she tied a red balloon to the bread rack, because a child had once bought a loaf with a coin that turned out to be a button, and she never had the heart to say so. The balloon was her way of saying the door was open.

One winter the balloon got loose. It was the frost that did it, the string going stiff and slipping off the hook while she lifted the trays. Up it went past the chimney pots, a small red stain on the grey sky, and the whole street stopped to watch it go. My grandmother stood in the doorway with flour to her elbows and said nothing at all, which was how everyone knew she was afraid.
The balloon came back the next morning, caught on the cord of the bell above the door, the string hanging down like a plumb line. Nobody on the street would own to tying it there. Grandmother kept the string and wound it round her smallest finger, tight enough to leave a ring, and she worked the day's dough that way for forty years. When they buried her, the baker's boy had a pastry in one pocket and a loose red thread in his hand, and he still cannot tell which of the two she meant him to keep.
