Small line drawing of a house on a leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a house with a pitched roof, chimney, two windows and a central door, drawn in a single thin black outline with no shading. The design sits in the middle of the frame on a hairy lower leg, with gravel ground and a shoe strap visible below. The image is shot in natural daylight with slightly warm skin tones and a plain, uncluttered composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The estate agent in Market Deeping wanted the house drawn in ink before he would put it on his board, so I sat at Mrs Haddow's kitchen table on a wet Thursday in March and sketched it the way my father had taught me, one unbroken line for each edge, no shading, because shading was for people with time to waste.

It was a small house. Two windows, a door set in the middle, and a chimney that leaned a touch to the east like a man with a sore hip. Dad had built it himself in 1931 and never once called it finished. Every spring he said the guttering wanted doing, or the front step was wrong, and every spring the rain found the same corner of the back bedroom and left its tide mark on the wallpaper.

The buyer was a widow from Bourne who wanted the door painted red and a rose bush planted by the gate. I told her she could paint the door any colour she liked, but the lines would stay where Dad had put them. She signed on the Friday. On Saturday I went round with the key and found the kitchen cold and bare, the coal scuttle still by the range where he always left it.

I folded the sketch small and put it in my shirt pocket, then walked home along the drain road with the house pressed against my chest, its chimney still leaning east, and I did not look back at the windows.
