Her husband had planted the two privet bushes the spring their boy was born, and they had grown up squarely either side of the door like a pair of bouncers. Every Saturday for eleven years she had clipped them into the same neat shapes. I had watched her do it from the bus stop on Alder Lane, thinking the house looked like it had decided to be polite about itself.
She asked me to help with the piano. Four of us tilted it down the steps, swore at the bottom step, and got it level on the pavement. When I climbed back up for the last box I found the front window still lit, one pane of the grid catching the evening, and a note stuck to the glass in her round handwriting: Next people, the pipes knock twice before the hot comes. Be patient with it.
I drove off with her piano and her tangerine tea caddy, and I still think about that note, and the porch light she left burning for whoever came next.
